ADAM DOWNED A GULP of coffee and wished he hadn’t. The thick, vile brew sloshed its way into his stomach like bilge water in the hold of a ship. Why did he drink the stuff? A week, he’d been living in Moose Lake, and what scared him most was, yesterday he’d started having cravings.

What did the folks at The Mug put in their brew? Everybody in town drank it, filing into the diner like zombies seeking brains.

At least it kept his headache at bay—most of the time. By late afternoon, it would begin beating at his temples again.

He entered Tom’s office—and yes, it still felt like Tom’s office—and paused. Something in here felt different. In his time here, he’d managed to tame some of the clutter, or at least beat it off the desktop. Now a sheet of paper sat smack dab in the middle of the desk.

Adam edged closer and set down his coffee to peer at the sheet. His heart sank.

The blood drained from his face and he muttered a curse. Of course, he’d expected the scandal to follow him. Moose Lake might be the back of beyond, but the web connected it to the rest of the world.

No, that wasn’t what bothered him, but the fact that someone in the newspaper office would leave it for him to find this way. I know you, somebody said. But who?

If he had to say, he’d pick Coleen. There was just something in her eyes when she looked at him. Besides, he didn’t think Jim Crawford had the stones.

He sighed and sank into Tom’s big chair. Jessica had pretty much ruined his life with her lies, back in Cleveland. He’d be damned if he’d let Coleen put him through the wringer here.

Even though he seemed no more able to get the damn woman off his mind than to stop drinking this vile coffee. He woke in the middle of the night with a picture of her in his head—wild, red hair, titillating freckles and those challenging, gray eyes. Okay, so he found her attractive. The world teemed with attractive women. He could leave this one alone.

Upon that thought, he heard her enter the outer office. He knew her step now, and it set his nerves alight.

Ordinarily, he’d go out and greet her, but in this case, he wanted to call her onto the carpet.

“Miss Collins, if you have a minute?”

She appeared in the doorway. This morning, she’d made no attempt to tame the wild hair. It sprung around her head, damp from the autumn rain. Adam wondered how it would feel to bury his fingers there.

She lifted a brow at him, as if she heard his thoughts.

He picked up the paper and dangled it from one corner. “Do I have you to thank for this?”

She peered at the photo, paled and shook her head. “That’s—”

“Jessica Taylor. I’m sure you’ve dug up all the details.”

“No. I mean, I didn’t put that there.
